Nuppu Beanie
The Nuppu Beanie was born from my desire to create a simple ribbed hat that offered just a little something extra for the knitter. It is a project that celebrates the rhythm of the craft, beginning with a neat tubular cast-on and traveling upward in a crisp 1x1 rib that provides both structure and stretch. By holding a single strand of merino wool together with a delicate silk mohair, the fabric develops a gentle halo and a sophisticated depth of colour, making it perfect touch of elegance for everyday wear. It adds that little bit of everyday magic and softness to our lives.
The sample is knitted using my favourite colour pink! I know my knitted wardrobe is probably more than half filled with different pink sweaters, shawls and beanies, but pink is my forever favourite. It’s a colour I consider the best neutral, even if I’m using a neon coral sometimes.
When choosing your materials, the magic lies in the combination of weights and bases. I used one skein of fingering-weight Merino Single by Nurja and paired it with one skein of lace-weight Mohair Silk by Freija Yarn. When held together, these strands create a more substantial, DK-weight feel that works up beautifully on these US 4 or 3.5 mm needles. It’s a fabric that is both elastic and firm. To achieve the intended fit, aim for a gauge of 28 stitches and 34 rows over 4 inches in an unstretched 1x1 rib.
The silhouette for the beanie is designed with significant negative ease (ideally between 4 and 5 inches) to ensure ribbed fabric that hugs the head comfortably. The pattern is graded into three sizes to help you find the best fit.. Regardless of the size you choose, the height remains generous to allow for a cozy, long folded brim.
The true magic of this piece is found in the crown decreases. Rather than a standard gather, Nuppu uses architectural double decreases that are thoughtfully placed. With the the double decreases we also get a nice flow of the ribbed texture. This crown is a little bit pointy but not too pixie-like, sitting right in the sweet spot of modern style (and my own liking).
