Meet Neon Checkers Socks! Oh, how I love this little pair! I loved every single stitch, every single turn of the heel, every single swap of the colourwork pattern. These are my true happy socks, no question about it!
I feel that some projects are all about comfort. Others are about colour. Neon Checkers Socks happily sit right in between. These socks are worked from the cuff down in stranded colourwork, featuring an easy but engaging checkered motif that feels graphic on the foot and genuinely fun on the needles. The bold contrast between a bright neon and a softer neutral creates a lively rhythm as you knit, making this a perfect small project when you’re craving something playful without too much complexity.
I designed Neon Checkers Socks as an invitation to experiment with colour. In my sample, I paired a neon pink with a dusty blush, but this pattern is wonderfully adaptable — try a sharp acid green with cream, cobalt with pale grey, or any combination that makes you smile. The checkers do all the work, letting even simple palettes shine. Neon Checkers Socks truly add a playful pop of colour for your sock drawer!
The socks feature a short-row garter stitch heel, which adds a subtle texture contrast while keeping construction straightforward and comfortable to wear. It’s a heel that feels approachable yet thoughtful, blending neatly into the graphic look of the colourwork. You can easily swap this for an afterthought heel, if that’s what you prefer!
I knitted my pair in one of my all time favourite yarns, 4-ply Merino Sock by Botanical Yarn! It’s not a secret that Sophie, the talented creative mind behind Botanical Yarn, and I share a deep love for all things pink! And that neon pink Monarda is one of Sophie’s true signature colourways, and I love it so much! I especially love it paired with a more neutral colour, like the dusty and pale Candyfluff pink here.
Like many of my sock designs, Neon Checkers Socks are built around rhythm and flow. Once you settle into the motif, the knitting becomes pleasantly meditative! This will make a perfect project for evenings on the sofa, for travelling, or quiet moments with your favourite podcast or audiobook.

1 (1, 1) skein of 4-ply Merino Sock by Botanical Yarn for MC, colourway Candyfluff (dusty pink)
1 (1, 1) skein of 4-ply Merino Sock by Botanical Yarn for CC, colourway Monarda (neon pink)
Approximate yardage needed for the socks
MC: 270 (300, 330) yds / 250 (275, 300) m
CC: 150 (170, 190) yds / 140 (155, 175) m
Needles: US 1½ (2.5 mm) and US 0 (2 mm) DPNs or circular needles (if using magic loop for small circumferences)
SIZING
Sizes: 1 (2, 3)
Finished circumference of foot and leg: 7 (8, 9)” / 18 (20, 22) cm. Choose a size with 0–1” (0–2.5 cm) of negative ease.
GAUGE
34 sts and 42 rounds = 4” (10 cm) in stockinette stitch colourwork, using larger needles, after blocking.
