Tips for April Scarf - part 1
Here we go! Our April Scarf knit-along, you know, more commonly known as KAL, is underway. And I’m thrilled! Given that I had a very slow start for this knit-along. I only cast on today, after working very focused on my special birthday sweater project, and straight after that I needed to focus on another slightly time sensitive project. More on both of those projects later!
But today, this afternoon to be even more specific, I did finally start my second April Scarf. There’s a reel on my Instargam if you want to see more of that tiny start. I got beautiful new colours from Ilo Yarn Shop for this project and I can’t thank Jonna and Laura enough! These new colours seem to be made for me: that buttery yellow Kirnu and and pastel-emerald feeling Akvamariini are totally my dream colours right now. Pure love!
Today I wanted to share some tips for the first part of the scarf. First of all: If you are using a lace-weight yarn held double, I strongly recommend caking up your yarn and then pulling one strand from the outside of the ball and second from the inside. Works like a charm with a sticky yarn like the one I’m using. Even when I used almost every single bit of the first colour for the edging, pulling from both ends never gave me any trouble. Things might be a bit different if you are using a more slippery yarn like something with a lot of silk.
Then my second tip goes for everyone, whether you are holding yarn double or not. Do not cut yarn between stripes, there’s no need. And when changing colour, always twist the two yarn in the same direction. That will give you a consistent edge. There’s a lot going on on the starting edge of the scarf, do not worry; it will all even out. Also make sure not to pull the yarn too tightly as you want to keep some elasticity for that lower edge of the scarf too.
If you haven’t joined the KAL yet, please do! This is a fun one. We’ll be working until the 8th June. Post your progress and finished scarf on Instagram using tag #aprilscarfkal
