Introducing the Fern Socks
Sometimes a design begins with a texture or a colour. Sometimes with a feeling. The Fern Socks started with the image of something growing—soft and slow, unfurling stitch by stitch like a fern from the forest floor.
These socks are a little different. They use intarsia to create a series of growing stripes—like little shoots reaching up and out as you knit your way around the foot. It’s a technique not often seen in socks, but I loved the idea of playing with colour in a way that feels organic and surprising, with stripes that don’t just march in line but stretch as they grow. They’re truly an invitation to play.
This design is perfect for choosing colours that speak to you—earthy and grounded, or bold and bright. Knitting this pair is the perfect project to slow down a little and enjoy the rhythm of something new. Intarsia as a technique is not as hard as you’d think - the turns are easy to work and you’ll quickly learn a new way of knitting intarsia in the round.
Fern Socks are knit from the cuff down, with a traditional heel flap and gusset. The intarsia sections are easy to manage once you get into the flow—just a few butterflies of yarn and a bit of patience. They’re a great way to use up mini skeins, leftovers, or that treasured hand-dyed yarn you’ve been saving for something special. And like a fern, no two need to be exactly alike—each stripe can grow in its own direction.
Fern Socks are available now, and I can’t wait to see your versions take root. Tag your projects with #FernSocks so we can all admire each other’s little masterpieces. Let’s make something beautiful together!
