Finding that perfect Cast-On for Socks

Continuing my series of blog posts on sock knitting! We have already talked about bit about the yarn choices, now it’s time to cast on. This might be a bit late for us all considering our sock KAL, but it’s nice to know about all the options for future reference! You might even use an alternative method for your second sock!

By now, we all know that socks are one of those endlessly satisfying projects—small, portable, and full of possibilities. But before you get lost in colour choices and heel turns, there’s one important detail that can make or break your sock: the cast-on. The right cast-on ensures a comfy fit, a polished and neat edge, and enough stretch to slip on effortlessly.

There are a few tried-and-true favourites that knitters swear by, each with its own charm. Some are quick and simple, others are a little fancier, but all have their place in the world of sock knitting. Let’s explore them!

1. Long-Tail Cast-On: The Classic Choice

A solid go-to for cuff-down socks. Quick, reliable, and stretchy—if you don’t pull too tight. It’s that old friend you can always count on, even if you sometimes underestimate how much yarn you need. The long-tail cast-on is best for everyday ribbed cuffs, for beginners and for that time when you just want to get knitting.

2. German Twisted Cast-On: Extra Stretchy

Think of this as the long-tail cast-on’s more flexible cousin. It looks similar but has a bit more give—perfect for those who like a little extra stretch at the cuff without things feeling loose. It’s also nicely similar on both right and wrong side. This cast-on is best for snug-fitting socks, ribbed cuffs that need more elasticity. This one is also known as Old Norwegian Cast-On!

3. Tubular Cast-On: Smooth & Polished

If you love a crisp, professional edge, the tubular cast-on is for you. It takes a little more time, but the result? A beautifully rounded start that flows seamlessly into ribbing. Best for those knitters who appreciate the details, when you want a clean, finished look.

4. Judy’s Magic Cast-On: Seamless for Toe-Up Lovers

A real modern classic! This one is magic—literally. It creates a perfectly closed toe with no bumps or seams, so your sock starts looking polished right away. I’ve also made a little tweak for this and it’s now my It’s best for toe-up socks and anyone who dislikes grafting.

5. Turkish Cast-On: Simple & Effective

An easy, no-fuss option for toe-up socks. Just wrap your yarn around the needles and go! It’s not as fancy as Judy’s, but it does the job beautifully. Best for sock knitters who love a straightforward method.

So, which one should you choose? The best cast-on is of course the one that works for you! Some knitters have a favourite they use for every sock, while others switch it up depending on the yarn, fit, or mood. Whichever method you pick, the joy of sock knitting starts right here—with those very first stitches. What’s your go-to sock cast-on? I’d love to hear in the comments!
