Tiny Pebbles Sweater
Imagine walking barefoot along the water's edge, feeling the cool, salty tide pull at the sand beneath your toes and the smooth, rounded weight of pebbles under your feet. These are the quiet treasures of a seashore stroll, and they are the heartbeat of one my old designs: the Tiny Pebbles Sweater.
A few weeks back I got an email about this lovely little colourwork sweater and was surprised to see that it hadn’t yet seen the light of day as a single pattern! So I decided to take action and make it one! So, without further ado: Here is Tiny Pebbles Sweater.
Tiny Pebbles Sweater was originally designed for the 10th issue of Laine Magazine, a very special issue that had many designs that have since turned into knitting classics! For example Snowy Forest by Midori Hirose was in this particular issue (and I still haven’t made one, maybe I should!).
Now back to Tiny Pebbles!
This relaxed, slightly oversized piece is more than just a garment: it is a collection of stitched memories, turning the wild adventures found in nature into a beautiful piece of knitting. The journey of knitting this sweater begins at the neckline, where a soft, twisted ribbing gives way to a yoke shaped with thoughtful short rows for a comfortable, professional fit. As you work your way down in one seamless piece, the yoke unfolds like a little shoreline discovery.
I chose the "Pebble" colourway of West Wool’s Bicycle yarn as the main canvas, as it’s a beautiful blend of Falkland Merino and Texel that provides the perfect rustic yet soft backdrop for the coastal palette of Aquamarine, Beatrix, and Powder. The true magic of the design lies in the rhythmic colourwork and the tactile bobbles that dot the yoke like tiny stones washed up by the waves. To ensure these "pebbles" truly pop with an architectural look, I’ve used a specific 5-stitch i-cord bobble (that I explain thoroughly in the pattern), allowing them to stand out against the smooth stockinette fabric. It is a meditative process, watching the patterns emerge row by row, much like the slow, steady rhythm of the sea.
Whether you are an adventurous beginner or a seasoned knitter, Tiny Pebbles is designed to be an easy-to-wear staple in your wardrobe. With nine sizes ranging from a 36" to a 68" finished chest circumference, you can choose a fit with plenty of positive ease! It’s perfect for layering on those breezy days when the ocean air turns chilly.
I hope that as you knit these stitches, you find the same peace and inspiration that I found on those salty walks by the beach.
